The Record of Ohio Deaths gives the dates of Louis' birth and death as above, and the place of his death, and the country of his birth, Germany. Records at the Protestant Church in Sippersfeld, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany, say that Louis was born on June 28, 1832, and baptized July 4, 1832, in that church. Sippersfeld is a rural village in the Palatinate (Pfalz) region of what is now Germany, although sovereignty over the region changed several times in the 19th century.

The baptismal record for Louis names his parents as Ludwig Will and Katharina Gross. Theobald Gross, who was born in Sippersfeld in 1840, lived with Louis Will in America and said they were cousins. If they were first cousins, then his mother Katharina was Theobald's paternal aunt. This is notable because the Ohio record of Louis' death says his parents were John L. Will and Katharina Myers. His mother seems to have died young, and his father remarried, so his son Albert, who filled out the death certificate, might not have known his grandmother's maiden name.

Regarding his father's name, it is likely that the names of both Louis and his father were originally "Johann Ludwig Will" but both were called "Ludwig," as in the baptismal record. His father adopted the English name "John Louis Will," while Louis took "Juan Louis Will," as written in the death certificates of his daughter Camille and his son Juan.

According to the 1900 census, Louis and his parents emigrated to America in 1832, sometime after his birth and baptism in June and July of that year. His mother evidently died not long afterwards, because his father married a woman named Christina, and a son John was born to them in Pennsylvania in 1838. In the 1850 census they were living in Pittsburgh with four children, while Louis was living in a rooming house in Pittsburgh and working as a chair maker. Eventually he became a pattern maker and worked in iron foundries the rest of his life.

In 1852 his orphaned twelve-year-old cousin Theobald Gross emigrated alone from Germany and found his way to Louis. (According to Theobald's family tradition, Louis lived near Canton, Ohio, but that would almost certainly have been later.) Louis found an older couple took Theobald into their family, taught him English, and enabled him to go to school.

According to the 1900 census, Louis married in 1859. Multiple records give his wife's name as "Harriet Jane Britton" (although a few say "Button") and say she was born around 1835 in England. Other records indicate she was born Sep 23, 1834, in the village of Sticklepath, Devon, England. She immigrated to America with her parents, William and Maria (Cole) Britton. They lived in Pittsburgh, which is no doubt where Louis met her. By 1860 they had moved to Ohio, where their first child was born. His father's family moved there as well, to Weathersfield in Trumbull County, and by 1963 Louis and Jane were living there as well. Louis' father died around this time, and the two families took up residence next door to each other.

Louis registered for the draft on June 27, 1863, in Weathersfield, Trumbull, Ohio, near Canton, under the name "J. Louis Will." He enlisted on April 27, 1864, and served in Company B, Ohio 171st Infantry Regiment beginning May 5, 1864. He was mustered out on Aug 20, 1864. By 1881 he was living in the city of Canton, at 51 Nimisala ST, together with his grown children, and he seems to have continued there the rest of his life.

Louis and Jane had the following children:
Juan Britton Will, son, b. March 23, 1860, Ohio; died Oct. 8, 1931, Canton, Stark, Ohio; bur. Niles.
Armand C, son, b. b. Oct 12, 1861, Ohio; died May 17, 1932, Canton, Stark, Ohio; bur. West Lawn cemetery.
Camille R, daughter, b. June 9, 1865, Pittsburgh, PA; died Aug. 27, 1930, Canton, Stark, Ohio; bur. Niles.
Louis Albert Will, b. Sep. 29, 1874, Niles, Trumbull, Ohio; died April 5, 1956, Orange County, CA.

Armand married Elizabeth Kress June 30, 1896;
. she was born April 15, 1870, in Canton, Ohio.
Louis Albert married Maud Kate Swift abt 1897;
. she was born Sep. 1, 1873, in Michigan.

The other two children remained unmarried and lived with their father. After his death, they lived with their brother Armand.

Louis and Jane split up sometime after their last child, Louis Albert Will, was born on Sep 29, 1874. Harriet Jane Will died June 1, 1893, in Canton, Stark, Ohio.

Louis worked as a pattern maker for cast iron products at W. R. Harrison & Co. By the nineties his joints had become too stiff to do this work, so in 1891 he applied for a veteran's pension on the basis that he was too disabled to continue working. He applied repeatedly but was denied. When he reached age 65, he applied on the basis that he was both 65 and disabled but was again denied. He enlisted the help of an attorney, and the rejection was finally overturned in Dec, 1900, with the pension awarded retroactively to when he turned 65 on June 27, 1897. He died on August 11, 1909, at the age of 77.
